Tasseography, or coffee cup reading, is an ancient art. Learn the basics of interpreting the shapes and symbols left in your cup.
Tasseography (from French tasse, "cup") is a divination method that interprets patterns in tea leaves, coffee grounds, or wine sediments. It's an ancient practice that allows you to tap into your intuition and subconscious mind through the medium of your morning brew.
Preparation
The ritual begins with the brewing. As you prepare your coffee (Turkish style works best, but any unfiltered method can do), focus on your question or intention. Drink the coffee until only the sediment remains at the bottom.
The Ritual of Inversion
Place the saucer over the top of the cup. With a quick, confident motion, flip the cup and saucer over. Let it sit for a few minutes to cool and allow the grounds to slide down the sides of the cup, forming patterns.
Reading the Cup
The handle represents you or the querent. Patterns near the handle are directly related to immediate events. The rim represents the present, the sides the near future, and the bottom the distant future. Look for shapes—animals, letters, numbers, or objects. Trust your first impression.
